CD Release Party
Contemporary jazz sextet Kalabash launched it’s new CD, “Keep Them Close” , at Toronto’s Jazz Bistro on Wed 17th April. The evening was a scorching success, as the band performed for a full house at the city’s newest jazz club. From the enthusiastic response, the audience loved the new songs Kalabash has added to its repertoire. The band performed all the music on the new CD, as well as songs from the self titled first release and a few jazz standards with that special Kalabash twist. The sextet is back on the block and red hot! Keep your antennae up for announcements on further appearances around the city, especially at the Jazz Bistro on the Wednesday night Latin and Caribbean Jazz jams. (Photos – Avital Zemer)
-
- The Cuban hurricane himself, drummer Joaquin Nunez Hidaldo, holding down the groove at the Jazz Bistro.
-
- The Kalabash frontline (Colleen Allen & Gareth Burgess) and supporting backline (Andrew Stewart-bass & Michael Shand-keyboards). Colleen laying it down with a horn solo!
-
- Colleen laying down some sweet soprano sax, with Andrew in a supporting role.
-
- Just one of the reasons we love Colleen so much, she plays sax, clarinet and flute, allowing Kalabash to explore so many different musical textures.
-
- Feelin' it! Michael Shand is simply one of the of the "baddest" keyboard players in the city. His work on the CD is just phenomenal!
-
- Adding a bit of sizzle with the triangle, on top of a bass solo, like lighting the Crème Brûlée!
-
- Pannist Gareth Burgess making that steel sing, and bass man Andrew Stewart in the "zone".
-
- Adding a touch of the right spices with the percussion kit, Tony Pierre, leader of the sextet.
-
- They don't make them any "cooler" than this, Andrew Stewart keepin' it real on the bottom end!
-
- Gareth Burgess, Kalabash front man, was on fire on the steel pan at the April 17th Kalabash CD launch.
